Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Writer / Producer / Director

Vidhu Vinod Chopra was born in Kashmir and studied filmmaking at the Film & Television Institute, Pune. His first documentary, An Encounter With Faces, highlighted the plight of India’s destitute children. It was nominated for an Oscar in the Documentary Short Subject category in 1978.

Since then, he has directed films like Khamosh, Parinda, 1942 - A Love Story, Kareeb, Mission Kashmir and Eklavya - The Royal Guard. Of these, Parinda and Eklavya - The Royal Guard were nominated as India’s official entries to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category in 1989 and 2007 respectively.

After the success of Mission Kashmir, Vinod decided to encourage new talent. He co-wrote and produced Munna Bhai MBBS, Parineeta and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. These films launched film directors Rajkumar Hirani and Pradeep Sarkar. 3 Idiots, his latest production, directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, released in December 2009 to glowing reviews and incredible audience response. The highest grossing Indian film of all time, 3 Idiots has shattered all previous records at the international and domestic box office. Other films in pre-production under the Vinod Chopra Films banner include Rajesh Mapuskar's Ferrari Ki Sawaari, the heartwarming tale of how the pursuit of an Indian cricket legend's Ferrari makes a young boy's dreams of playing cricket at Lords a reality; Rajkumar Hirani's Munna Bhai Chale Amerika, the third of the immensely successful Munna Bhai series; and Ram Madhvani's Taalismaan, India's first fantasy epic based on the path breaking and hugely successful Indian novel Chandrakanta.

Vinod’s last film as director was Eklavya - The Royal Guard. The dramatic action-thriller won worldwide critical acclaim. The LA Times wrote that it was suggestive of a ‘lost film by David Lean’. Vinod is set to produce and direct his first English language feature, Broken Horses that is set amidst the border crime of New Mexico. Along with Broken Horses, he is also writing, producing and directing a Hindi language film – 50th Anniversary (50vi Saalgirah). Set in Kashmir - a city of shimmering lakes and majestic houseboats - 50th Anniversary is a film about the Kashmir of his childhood.
